Ordnance Survey (OS) is the official body
responsible for the mapping of Britain. It
was established 1791 as the Trigonometrical
Survey to continue work initiated 1784 by
Scottish military surveyor General William
Roy (1726-1790). Its first accurate maps
appeared in 1830, drawn to a scale of 1 in to
the mile (1:63,000).
